RICHARD ATKINSON'S latest feature documentary, "Single" (released September, 2009), was co-written/produced and directed with Jane Scandurra and became a BarnesandNoble.com "Pick of the Week" and hit their "Best Selling Documentaries" list.
Described by Tiffanie Greene, NY film critic, as "Brilliantly done" and by Juliet Huddy on Fox TV as a "really cool, cool documentary" the film is available on Netflix.com, Blockbuster.com, TCM.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Amazon.com, New Video/itunes, 40 cable TV VOD operations and 20 airlines.
The film, about the dramatic growth of the single population in the USA and overseas, has been written up in numerous publications. It examines the trends and influences behind this demographic shift. The cast consists of experts, singer/songwriters, comedians and "real" people and is fast becoming a standard at public and college libraries (Go Pictures and Films, LLC production).
Also in 2009 Richard produced and directed two music videos - one solo, one duet - for the launch of the "Wink if you Want it" ™ clothing brand (www.winkifyouwantit.com). Again in 2009 Richard directed episodes of "Intersection", a dramatic series, for Myriad Arts Productions.
Currently Richard has a documentary in production tentatively titled "Elza" and is in pre-production on a narrative feature film based on the play "Dogs Lie" by Ronnie Cohen and Jane Beale which should complete end June, 2010.
Later in 2010 Richard will be working with Bruce Forester, the acclaimed thriller author, on his epic title, "Fatal Betrayal".
In 2006 (released 2010) Richard co-directed/produced with Dore Hammond "Pluck", a documentary about luminaries who contributed to politics, the media, publishing, fashion, music and the arts in NYC in the creative milieu of the 1950's and early 60's.
The film appeared in numerous festivals and is available on Indieflix.com and Netflix.com and other platforms (an Atkinson-Hammond Productions 1, LLC film).
Also in 2006 Richard was credited as Associate Producer for the Myriad Arts Productions feature film, "Home Coming", another festival winner and expected to be released in 2010.
In 2005 Richard co-directed with Dore Hammond the 29 minute short film, "Divine Light", an award-winning perspective about the legendary New York Arts League teacher, Frank Mason, who painted in the style of the Old Masters (a Dore Hammond film).
Richard's interest in documentary films began at the age of 17 when he was one of the cameramen on an 8,000 mile overland expedition to the mountainous borders of Turkey, Iran and Iraq filming the Kurdish way of life. The expedition was written up in The Sunday Telegraph Magazine, one of the UK's most read publications.
Richard's work has screened at The Berkshire International Festival Sunday Series, The NY New Filmmaker Summer series, The Carolina Film and Video Festival (winner), The Palm Springs Festival of Short Films, The Avignon/New York Film Festival, The National Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences, The Tiburon Film Festival, The National Arts Club, The Westchester Film Festival, the Hampton's Guildhall and the Harvard Independent Film Group.
His films have been written up in The National Review online, NY Press, Rogue Cinema, Tinape.com, LoHud Press/Journal News, MyHomeTownBronxville.com and MORE Magazine. They have also featured on The TODAY Show with Kathy Lee and Hoda, The Fox TV Morning Show, PBS's "Something to Talk About" and in Canada on the @ Issue Show.
On radio his films have been discussed on KCEO San Diego, WBCR and WVOX Westchester.
Richard's work forms part of the permanent collection at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University and can be found in the libraries at Northwestern University, St. Mary's University of Minnesota, Indianapolis-Marion County, Niles, Ela Area District, Douglas County, St. Charles District, Rochester District, North Cent Regional District, Darien and Bronxville to name a few.
Richard received a BA (Hons.) from Leeds University, England. He studied Film Production and later Directing for Film at NYU SCPS and Camera and Technology at the International Film and TV Workshops, Rockport, ME.
Richard is a former Morgan Stanley Managing Director and has lived with his family in Asia, Europe and the USA and has traveled extensively in each region.
